Intelligent Design [Manufacturing Business Technology]

Intelligent Design

There was a time when the simple way a conveyor functioned was fully contained within its name: it conveyed materials from one place to another. But as equipment requirements in manufacturing facilities and distribution centers have advanced past the basics, even the conveyor has gone from simply a belt, some rollers, and some rails to a high tech piece of equipment that can talk to the user by way of integrated automation systems. "Manufacturers applying intelligent, automated conveyor systems are increasing their operational benefit, lowering their maintenance costs, while gaining overall life expectancy and reliability," explains Boyce Bonham of Hytrol Conveyor Company. read more

Conveyors In Manufacturing: Link People to Safety and Productivity [Material Handling & Logistics]

Conveyors In Manufacturing: Link People to Safety and Productivity

Conveyors are the material handling backbone of U.S. manufacturing and if Mitch Johnson is right, that backbone is about to get more steel. As director of systems development for Hytrol Conveyor Co., Johnson is seeing more business come in from U.S. manufacturers after years of dominance by the distribution side of Hytrol's markets.

"There's more activity in the manufacturing realm," he says. Several of our integrators have come back to us for projects that have been much more complicated and needed more engineering from us because they're more manufacturing intensive. There's more demand for accuracy, which means you're interfacing to a robot, and we have to design a station that will hold certain fixtures in a more accurate position so something can address it." read more

Hytrol president cautiously optimistic about conveyor market [DC Velocity]

On a roll at Amway

When consumer products giant Amway decided to move its Midwest fulfillment operations to a building on its main campus in Ada, Mich., managers saw their chance for a clean sweep. From the outset, they rejected the idea of replicating the setup of the retailer's former regional facility, located just a few miles away. Instead, they would use the opportunity to redesign the fulfillment process and introduce more automation. read more

Avoid Cutthroat Competition That Bleeds Red Ink

At Hytrol's Executive Summit and Sales Meeting held in Little Rock this week, the conveyor manufacturer's president, Gregg Goodner, proudly announced that it sold $11.6 million in product in May. He attributed this to his company's attention to lean practices and eliminating non-value added work. He acknowledged that going to a lean philosophy came with a painful four-year learning curve, "but if we're not growing we're not surviving," he reasoned. read more

The Good Times Are Rolling At Hytrol

Earlier this week, I spent a day in Little Rock at Hytrol's Executive Summit & Sales Meeting. Nearly 150 integration partners gathered to talk about conveyors, sortation, systems integration and how to win in the marketplace. During a week that followed discouraging employment numbers and talk of a double dip, Gregg Goodner, Hytrol's president, was both realistic and optimistic. read more
Working Together Means More [MHEDA Journal]

Working Together Means More

There are multitudes of opportunities in material handling to design and implement innovative systems for customer applications. Manufacturers of equipment bring certain strengths to the table, and distributors add their unique talents to the equation to solidify the overall solution. With the complexity of today's systems, the word distributor might not encompass all of what an integration partner can do for the customer. Integration partners that work with manufacturers to provide the overall solution are stronger than either entity alone. read more
Where Have All The Distributors Gone? [MHEDA Journal]

Where Have All The Distributors Gone?

Over the past three to five years, end-users have shifted their ideology when it comes to material handling distributors. End-users no longer expect their material handling providers to simply peddle a piece of equipment. They demand solutions, and they are becoming more wary of dealing with multiple suppliers to meet their needs. Instead of dealing with one company for a palletizer, another company for an AS/RS and then a third for conveyors, end-users today want the security of an integrated system provided by a single source. Therefore, the customer is the one driving the shift toward using integrators rather than distributors. read more
