Laydown Device
HOW "SPECIAL" IS USED: The laydown device is used to lower box springs from a standing position onto a 190-ACC conveyor.

HOW PRODUCT IS CYCLED THROUGH THE UNIT: The product is conveyed onto the laydown device in the vertical position by means of an inclined 19 RB and a UHMW dogbone lined A-frame structure. Once the product arrives at the device, the RB stops and the pivot frame is lowered by air cylinders into a 190 ACC conveyor which carries the box springs away. Once the product has cleared the pivot frame is returned to its original upright position in time for the next box springs.

UNUSUAL SPECIFICATIONS:

Because the pivot point of the pivot frame and the box springs could not be designed at the same location, the cross members of the pivot frame are constructed of round tubing and one 1.7 OD roller. This will prevent damage to the box springs and allow the cross members to fit into the small area between the top of the rollers and the V-belt of the 190-ACC.

Conveyor of the Month

Model TR

The Model TR is one of Hytrol’s most popular conveyor models. The TR is designed with built-in guard rails which makes it ideal for overhead conveying applications. It easily conveys cartons, cases, bags, etc., as well as loose parts.

The Model TR is available in 10 bed widths ranging from 8 in. to 32 in. The unit is reversible (with a center drive) and comes with a standard 1/2 HP - 230/460V-3 Ph. 60 Hz totally enclosed fan cooled C-face motor. Conveying speed is a constant 65 FPM. Capacity is 75 lbs, maximum load per linear foot of conveyor.

There is also a wide variety of optional equipment available for the TR, including different belts, a V-belt drive, gravity brackets, casters, ceiling hangers, other size motors, etc. The unit can also be supplied with a number of drive configurations including overhead end, side mounted end, center, or low elevation side mounted center drive.

A recent change in the design of the Model TR involved the edge of the trough feature. The old style "PC Type" edge was replaced with the FORMED channel guard.

Application Information

Gravity conveyor is often installed on a decline. When used on a decline, its most likely application is a "gravity flow system." Although less expensive than power conveyor, gravity does not provide a positive flow. The degree of pitch needed for a gravity conveyor to operate efficiently depends on several factors:

1. The type of conveyor, roller or skatewheel.
2. Are the bearings grease packed or clean? (Grease packed bearings roll slower)
3. The weight of the package.
4. The quality or firmness of the package bottom.

- The flow rate of boxes on a gravity conveyor is also affected by the acceleration effect of a spinning roller or wheel which is still spinning after a box has travelled over it.

- Straight line of gravity decline. Boxes go faster and faster as they move down the conveyor.

- Retarding plates and other restraining devices are available to slow boxes. Boxes may also be slowed by changing the angle of decline periodically.

- Items usually flow easier on a skatewheel than a roller conveyor.

Hytrol's Hy-Lites...Changing with the Times

Since its first publication issue in 1967, the Hytrol Hy-lites has gone through many changes. For over 25 years, the newsletter was a two-color format. In October, 1993, the Hy-lites went to full color (see picture at left). Since that time, methods and technologies have changed.

The Hytrol Graphics area has also found it must change with the times.

In the past, production of the Hy-lites was quite different than it is today. All design, typesetting, technical drawings, paste-up, camera work, etc. was done by hand. In the mid 90’s, powerful MacIntosh computers and scanners replaced the drawing boards, PMT cameras, and typesetting equipment. The Hy-lites is now done almost entirely with computers.

With the availability of the personal computer and the Internet phenomenon, information, goods, and services are there at the push of a button. As of this issue, and on a trial basis, the Hy-lites will suspend printing and will be available only on the Hytrol web-site. We will continue to produce the Hy-lites with the same care and quality that you have come to expect in the newsletter’s 34 year history.
